Lost Season 5 Redux Part 1 (kind of)

Ok, so I started out Season 5 with such great redux momentum, giving myself little
props along the way as I devoured the episodes and gave them corresponding recaps -
not an easy task by the way but totally worth it. Yay me all the way through 5:8 and then apparently I hit a (work)wall,
and then - nothing. Now I'm half-assingly picking up where I left off in an effort to barrel my
way through to the end of season 5 in the next 17 days so who's with me? You can see the
earlier recaps for 5:1-5:8 here (start at the bottom of that link) and then come back and
read below for the Cliff's Notes version (sans clever clip art and theorie - sigh) to the latter half of season 5. Namaste Ya'll!

S5:9 Namaste

Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid all got dropped into 1977 Dharmaville while Sun, Ben and Lapidus got dropped on side-kick island in present day 2007. Or 8. Hard to imagine that they are still working on that runway almost 30 years later - see season 3.

The new and improved Sun whacks present-day Ben on the head and renders him unconscious so she can go off in search of her beloved Jin on the main island. She encounters Christian Shepherd who is holing up in present-day run-down Dharmaville where he shows her a photo of the 1977 Dharma crew. You looking for Jin? Well there he is sweetheart, good luck with that.

Sayid is considered to be a Hostile/Other and young Ben makes sandwiches for prisoners. Kinda ike Juliet used to do in season 3.

Meet baby Ethan. Hard to believe with such a sweet mom he turns out to be such a freaking lunatic. And, he survives the Dharma wipe-out. Interesting.

Sawyer/Le Fleur has established himself as the thoughtful leader and holds Jack accountable for a staggering 815-er body count and being too damn reactive. There's a new sheriff in town and he's gonna read his book and think for a while. Sit on that Janitor Jack.

Radzinzky was building a model of the Swan station out of toothpicks. Cool.

S5:10 He's Our You

Sayid was mercilessly killing chickens at the age of 8 and Ben used him for his talents until it finished serving his purpose and then he dropped him like a bad habit. After years of trying to walk the straight and narrow in search of new purpose, Sayid ends up back on the island where he finally says 'fug it' and nails 12 year old Ben in the chest with a bullet. There. Purpose served.

Sawyer and Juliet are scared to death of losing the life they've made.

Hurley is once again in charge of the food

Sorry Kate, Sawyer is off limits so says Juliet. They're playing house now and they want it to stay that way. I says 'WHO CARES!?!' Oh, and Jack seems actually relieved to not be in charge.

He's our you is Sawyer's way of introducing Sayid to their resident torturer/interrogator- Oldham.

Ben was willing to sacrifice lives via burning van, even at the age of 12, to save his own ass.

Who is Sayid's lady captor working for that she was able to get him on the 316 flight? Just when we thought it was Ben.... I smell a Widmore.

S5:11 Whatever Happened, Happened

Love Hurley when he states the obvious: If Ben dies then we won't exist. And Why didn't Other Leader Ben remember getting shot by Sayid when he was 12? The whole exchange between he and Miles was riveting, confusing and revealing. Loved it. Thank you Darlton for your clever clever ways.

Is Jack stoned or something? All motivation to do anything remotely productive seems to have disappeared as he sits back to make sandwiches (munchies, wha?) while refusing to save young Ben. He's done fixing things.

Sawyer's baby mama is still pissed at him.

Props to Kate as we finally found out where little Aaron landed - with his rightful grandma. Although I gotta say the whole leaving him in the hotel room until biograndma was 'ready' did seem a little weird.

Kate isn't standing for Jack's stoner ways and refuses to let young Ben die. She and Sawyer take him straight to the Lovely Lashed Source. They make the ultimate decision as Alpert warns them that if he saves young Ben, he will remember none of what happened and will also lose his innocence, officially becoming an 'Other'. We also overheard that Ellie and Charles (aka Eloise Hawking and Charles Widmore) would not be happy about this. This what? Making a deal with the Dharmites or I dunno, SAVING BENJAMIN LINUS?? So off to the temple go Alpert and dying young Ben for some good old fashioned healing.

Present day Ben - Big Ben - wakes up to a very suave and alive looking Locke. The look on Big Ben's face when Locke greets him with Welcome to the land of the living - priceless.

S5:12 Dead is Dead

This on was tough. We must have bounced around 4 different time lines at least. And not like time skipping island fashion, but in storyline fashion and boy does my head hurt.

Pony Express is how 1977 Charles Widmore rolls and he was upset about taking on a Dharmite young Ben but backed down as soon as Alpert played the 'Jacob says' card. The island has healed a dying Ben Linus once again - sorry Sayid. And then Widmore calls Ben a friend. Wow. Later Big Ben mentions to Locke that sometimes friends can be significantly more dangerous then enemies John. Flashback-forward-whatever - to the early island 90's where we see a handcuffed Widmore being escorted off the island via submarine. His charges? Coming and going from the island and having a daughter with an outsider - someone off island.

When present day Big Ben wakes up to a living Locke he says that he's returned to the island to be judged. By Smokie. New Suave Locke wants an apology for big Ben offing him. The best apology Ben can muster is in the form of a sawed-off shot gun as he shoots Ceasar in the chest in order to secure a boat to head after Sun to the main island.

1988 Big Ben (age 23?) kidnaps a baby Alex and tells Danielle is she should ever hear whispers to run the other way. Later Widmore - leader of The Others - commands Ben to kill the baby but Ben refuses. Ben believes the island wants her to live but Charles says that if the island wants her dead, then she'll be dead. Ouch.

Present day Big Ben tells Sun that Dead is dead and just because Locke is walking around doesn't necessarily mean that he's alive and now Ben is scared shitless. So Locke may not be quite alive like Christian Shepherd.

Present day Big Ben summons Smokey but to no avail. New Suave Locke is impatient and confident that he can take Big Ben to Smokey. The man just knows stuff and it is driving Big Ben crazy.

Cutting to the end of this time-packed episode, Ben finds Smokey - or Smokey finds Ben - in a hieroglyph laden temple (Curses, I left my hieroglyph decoder ruler at work!) and judges the hell out of him. Smokey lets a remorseful Big Ben live but not without sending him a hefty warning in the form of his deceased daughter who lets him know that Locke is in charge now so don't eff it up!

I commend your enthusiasm to recap these. I was going to rewatch the entire series and then thought better of it. I did however purchase rabbit ears for my tv so I may watch the episodes as they air vs having to download them after the fact.

I did, however, download the free recap from Itunes that's about an hour long.

I don't know how I'm going to feel once this show is over.
