Pumpkin Spice Blahtte

Pay no mind to this 90 degree late September Monday because according to the Starbucks calendar it's Fall ya'll. And what does Fall bring? That's right, all together now - The Pumpkin Spice Latte... blek.

First of all, I don't get it. I've tried them, twice and gagged both times. To me it was like someone had taken pumpkin bread and put it into a blender with a sh*t ton of whipping cream, heated it, and poured it in a cup and then topped it off with even more whipping cream and served it up 'fresh'. I just don't get it. I have good friends and co-workers that live for this time of year solely because of that cup of gross and quite frankly most of those individuals make good solid choices throughout the rest of the year. This one however has me questioning all of you.

The calorie content in those little drinks kills me. Me, I'm a foodie, and I'd much rather blow that 400-500 calories on bacon and eggs. Or 3 bowls of raisin bran - for real. Did you know you can check out all the nutritional information of Starbucks drinks online? Of course you did. But you can Check it out here anyways. It's hours of entertainment to distract you from your work day. I'm happy to see that my usual Starbucks fairs don't creep past 200 and really even less than that since I habitually get sugar-free because like I said, bacon and eggs and raisin bran.

But you know, to each their own my friends. Enjoy your Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Me, I won't say a thing. I will sit there silently and not judge. Ha.

Sisters

We've lived 2000+ miles away from each other for 10 years and yet it seems that no matter the distance, we remain forever connected in a weird sister-psychic sort of way. For example, today she told me that she had just finished a Margaret Atwood book that she bought six years ago. It'd been collecting dust on her shelf until she came across it last Friday. Last Wednesday I went through by bookshelf looking for a good book to dust off and waddaya know, I came across a Margaret Atwood book that I'd bought 10 years ago that I was finally going to read.

We've been known to do things like this over the years, whether it's buying the same purple bath mat, the same shirt from an obscure store, or picking up the phone and knowing it's her (sans caller ID) before she even says anything.

If you are ever fortunate enough to go to a movie with us, be warned. Sitting between us is like having surround sound that is almost too close for comfort. We've been known to make the same comments at the same time while laughing obnoxiously in unison. Same pitch, same breaths, same everything.

I love it. I love her.

Smoke.

All soap boxes aside, I admit, there are times when I miss smoking. Although it's been 10+ years since I had cigarette in hand as a 'social smoker,' there are times when I miss the sociability of it all. Sometimes. Take her for example. Just a woman smoking on her porch. Remove her cigarette and now she looks... Lost in thought? Inebriated to the point of paralysis? Either way, kind of weird. But with that cigarette, her sense of purpose is restored. Her porch presence is justified. She's just a woman smoking on the porch.

I tried smoking about 2 years ago and I have two words for that venture: epic. fail. I was with 2 girlfriends and we were - on a porch. They pulled out their cigarettes as social smokers sometimes do when there's a porch and wine involved. I asked for one. It was a Marlboro Light, ah, I was 18 again. It hit me hard, I was buzzed in 2 puffs. The first cigarette went down quick and I laughed at the nostalgia of it all. I went for a second one, took one long drag... and threw up.

So that was that. And while I'm pretty sure that I will never be a social smoker/dabbler again, there will be times when I still miss it. Until then, I am forced to tote a book or laptop with me when perched on my porch with my wine or coffee so as not to appear lost in thought, inebriated, or stalkerish. I may not know what book is in hand and my laptop may not even be on, but I will have them none the less.

Cau for now.
